Course Activities:

English 24 teaches you the research process. In this course you will learn how to find research sources, both print and electronic, critically analyze those sources, and write up the results of your research in a formal report. You will explore themes and issues that derive from the course readings.

Readings: You will be reading one novel The Handmaidís Tale, which was written in the mid-1980ís. This novel depicts a future society in which women have few rights. The second book is Manís Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. This is a core background text that will provide you with important background information, as well as resources you will use for your writing and research. I have also put several required readings on reserve in the library and on our web site. You will be required to print out copies of the readings on the web site. You are encouraged to make Xeroxed copies of the readings in the library. Please note that each of these readings is REQUIRED.

You will be given written quizzes on topics from each of the assigned readings approximately every other week. If you are absent without a doctorís note on the day of a quiz, you will receive a ZERO for that quiz.

Research: We will explore how to find sources in the library and on the Internet. In class you will learn how to search for informational sources on the Internet and how to evaluate the validity and reliability of those sources.

You should be prepared to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week doing research on the Internet. There will be weekly Internet assignments, which you will be required to complete and email to me. During the semester, please check your email EVERY DAY since I will be sending you messages with course information on a regular basis.

Research Writing: You will be required to produce several substantial writing projects based on your research. These projects must be typed, double-spaced, using 12 point font with 1Ē margins all around. The project should be divided into an Introduction, various subheaded Body Sections, a Conclusion, and must have a Works Cited list that conforms to MLA citation format.
